Warner-Noll Bake Shops: Recipe Cards Elmer Warner and Walter Noll joined forces as bakers in the late 1930s. Their first Warner-Noll Bake Shop was at 4415 South Kingshighway. They were best known for their bakery departments at the Hampton Village and Maplewood Bettendorf's stores and at multiple National Food Center stores. Frank Fresenburg, who would go on to start his own bakery, was foreman of the Warner-Noll operation. According to Fresenburg, Elmer Warner was "the best cake baker ever." Fresenburg delighted in passing his expertise and secrets on to younger bakers, including Chris Leuther. Leuther has been a baker for over 40 years, working in various St. Louis bakeries. Throughout his career, Leuther has collected baking recipes, or "formulas," as they're known in the trade. He was able to obtain Warner-Noll's original recipe cards from Frank Fresenburg.
