The "secret" was the Bernice Mayonnaise base, a mayonnaise which is no longer manufactured. It was a heavy mayonnaise, rich in oil and egg yolk, creating a denser, more luxurious texture. While the later recipe called for granulated garlic, Helen's original recipe used fresh garlic.
